Reading books

Children will bring a reading book home with them, along with their purple reading record. Please read with your child regularly. Little and often is the best way. There are some tips to support with this in the videos below. We ask that you write in your child’s reading record each time you read with them. Teachers will read with every child at least once per week and swap their book. However, books will only be swapped if there is a comment in their reading record from home.

Keywords

Children will also be coming home with a set of keywords. These are words they need to learn by sight, as most of them cannot be read phonetically. There are some ideas to support this included in the videos below.

Phonics

Children in Reception are taught to read and write through phonics. We use the Read Write Inc scheme at Bishop Road. We have made a phonics workshop video to help you understand how phonics is taught in school. We hope that you will be able to dip in and out of this during the year to help you support your child with reading and writing at home.
