Welcome to our Library

The library is the heart of the school with almost 9000 books ranging from fiction, non-fiction, poetry, picture books, comics and more: we have something for all children to enjoy.

Our library provides a welcoming and stimulating literacy environment that strives to create lifelong lovers of reading.

Children from Year 2 and up visit the library fortnightly. Each class appoints two Student Librarians helping to scan out class books. In Year 6, Student Librarians are chosen through an application process and play a vital role in supporting the library.

You can find out more about our school library and see photos from class visits by looking through our school blog.

Year 6 Student Librarian Blog Post

Term 2

Probably one of the most exciting parts of our job up in the library is introducing new books to the shelves. Many books come into the library in the form of donations and orders. The process is fun and simple…

First, we open the books to the blank page by the cover and apply a Bishop Road stamp. Next, we stick a barcode and genre label to the books and add a book jacket. It is an exciting and magical experience!

Making displays has been one of the most fun things we have done so far. We’ve been doing some artwork based on our next whole school project; Hydrology. We have labelled new books to do with the project and have made artwork such as taps, clouds, rain droplets and even and entire river! It’s been really fun watching everyone’s talents help make the display, whether it’s cutting, drawing, labelling or sorting out the books we’ve all played our part.

Finally, we believe that our jobs in the library are amazing and we wouldn’t trade it for anything else at school. We all hope you love and appreciate the library as much as we do.

Term 3

This term saw the start of lots of exciting author visits! Reception were visited by picture book author, Zoe Arena, for their first ever author visit. Year 4 and 6 were visited by comedian and actor Alexander Armstrong where he spoke about his new book – the second installment in the ‘Evenfall’ series. Our whole school project of Hydrology kicked off this term and book corners were stocked with new books, hand delivered by us librarians! This term, we were also given an amazing opportunity to help one of our favourite authors – Katya Balen – decide on her new front cover artwork. We were used as a focus group by her publishing team and sent over designs for new covers for us to give feedback on – we hope our choices make the final cut! Finally, we began our ‘Big Label Mission’ by sending the labelling of the new Year 2 and 4 book corner books into overdrive! We’re still not quite finished with this gigantic task, but we’re certain we can have them all shipped to book corners soon.

We can’t wait for Term 4 and the Reading Festival in particular!

Term 4

As student librarians, we swap the books on display every two weeks so that each time a class comes to the library there are new books to see. We’ve also been helping this term by doing lots of scanning and returning of books. We’re also almost finished with labelling and distributing the brand new Year 4 book corner books!

This term, we’ve worked lots on artwork for new library displays and has created flowers and stars (out of books!). We have also helped more Year 2’s with extra library time, which will be continuing next term – it has been extremely enjoyable for us all!
