Bishop Road Swimmers make a splash – National Championships and City Wide

English Schools’ Swimming Association National Relay Championships

Our Year 6 girls’ relay team recently competed at the prestigious National Finals of the English Schools’ Swimming Association (ESSA) Primary Team Championships. There were 24 finalists from across England, which included regional qualifiers from both independent and state schools. We took part in both the freestyle and medley relays. Girls taking part were Lara C (backstroke), Lily S (breaststroke), Amber M (butterfly) and Stella S (front crawl). The strokes they did in the medley are shown in brackets. The detailed results can be viewed on the ESSA website.

First up was the 4x25m freestyle relay where we finished 17th in a time of 1:06.38. The girls were over four seconds faster than in the regional qualifying event and finished just four hundreds of a seconds shy of qualifying for the B final. In the 4x25m medley relay the girls went an impressive six seconds faster than the SW heats and qualified in 16th for the B final in a time of 1:18.59. They finished 7th in that final to move up a place to 15th. In both events we were the 4th placed state school. It was a great experience to take part in a national event like this and continues our proud representation at this level of competition. Amazing and well done girls!

Bristol Schools’ Swimming Association (BSSA) Primary Championships

Hot on the heels of the national championships were the BSSA Primary Championships where our wider squad showed some great swimming. There were was very exciting races in a closely contest competition – some races being decided by small margins. We collected an impressive 10 medals across 13 events and finished 2nd in the girls’ competition, 3rd in the boys’ competition and had the third highest points total overall. We had great consistency across the team and the highlight was Lily S winning the 25m breaststroke. Standout performances (lots!) as follows: –

1st – Lily S in the girls 25m breaststroke in a time of 21.06s

2nd – Lara C, Lily S, Amber M and Stella S in the girls 4x25m medley relay in a time of 1:22.62

3rd – Miles G in the boys 25m breaststroke in a time of 22.69

3rd – Lara C in the girls 25m backstroke in a time of 20.57
