Welcome to the Nursery Webpage

Important Information

Nursery Staff

The Nursery is taught by Mrs Steimetz (also known as Mrs S)

Mrs Clark is supporting the Morning Nursery, whilst Miss Gomes is supporting the Afternoon Nursery.

On a Friday afternoon Mrs Bird will be teaching the Afternoon Nursery as PPA cover.

You might like to take inspiration from the traditional tales we will be reading at school this term:

Goldilocks And The Three Bears

The Enourmous Turnip/Watermelon

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

The Little Red Hen

Jack and the Beanstalk/Meanstalk

On Traditional tales day the children will have traditional tale themed activites such as making a bridge of the billy goats to cross the river safely or making gingerbread men to take home.

Wow cards!

We are always excited to hear about learning at home. To help us learn about home learning, families can complete a wow card and send it into school. An adult will then be able to talk to your child about their achievement. Wow cards can be about everything from being kind to a sibling, learning to ride a bike or even becoming more confident at counting carefully.

What are we learning about this term?

Our topic this term is: "What a performance!"

Baby bear was shocked to see someone in her bed!

What are we learning about?

This term we are learning about traditional tales.  We will be exploring different themes covered in the books and also looking at alternative versions and talking about how stories have changed over time.

We are learning about:

Subject What are we learning about?
English

This term we will be starting our phonics work based on the Ruth Miskin phonics scheme.  The children will be learning 1/2 sounds each week which will be linked to the stories we are reading.

We will be starting with the sounds:

m and a w/c 14th Jan

s and d w/c 21st Jan

t and i w/c 28th Jan

m/a/s/d/t/i revision w/c 4th Feb

Maths

In maths we will be sorting items into different categories for example by colour, shape or size.

We will also be looking at the properties of 2D shapes through the use of a feely bag.  This way the children can guess what shape they can feel before they see it!  The children will be learning a song to help them remember the names of the shapes as they pass around the feely bag (like pass the parcel):

mystery bag, what's inside,

what's the shape you like to hide,

is it a circle, triangle, rectangle or square,

feel the shape and say what's there.

We will be counting out the objects we have sorted by placing them in lines or by pointing or moving them into piles, learning the various methods to help them to count accurately at least 5 objects.

We are also using cameras to go on number hunts.  We will be looking at a tally chart to amrk off which ones we have seen.

Topic

As our topic is "what a performance" lots of the work we will be doing is based around story telling.

The children will have the opportunity to learn and re-tell traditional stories, find out what a character is and some of the personality traits of the main characters in fairy tales e.g. "the wolf".

We will be looking at settings of the stories and trying to create these using the constructions sets.

The children will also be learning about the circus and trying out different physical skills such as balancing a bean bag on one foot or walking across a balance beam.

Ivy goes on a number hunt!

William has spotted something!

 Tilly finds a 9!

i'm bigger than 3!

Links to useful websites

  http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/interactive/onlinestory.htm

woodlands Junior school has some excellent traditional tales that the children can interact with on their website above.

http://www.communication4all.co.uk/http/traditionaltales.htm

You can even have a go at making up some of your own traditional tales using the power points from communication for all. The pages can be printed off for you to read with children at bed time!

www.oxfordowl.co.uk

On Oxford owl there are some fantastic resources to suppoert your child's reading and sound recognition at home (there are also some useful maths resources too! check out the three bears position gale here:   http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/Maths/eBooks/Three_Bears/   )

You may want to know more about phonics and how to pronounce the sounds we will be learning at school.  All this information can be found here!

How can I help my child at home?

Talk about the books you are reading and encourage your child to read to you...remember they don't have to know what each word says, just by reading the story to them a few times will encourage them to pick up the language of the book.  The may use the pictures or some key words to help them work out what comes next.
